Ramadan Detox
Ramadan is the ninth month of the lunar Muslim calendar and is one of the most sacred times of the year for Muslims. Many people know it as a month where Muslims abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset. Because we're in a state of fasting anyway, it is also a natural and much-anticipated opportunity to detox from the spiritual, emotional, and physical toxins that contaminate our hearts, minds, and bodies.
This year, we were blessed to witness another Ramadan from February 18-March 19. This pleasantly coincided with the end of a long, difficult winter and the beginning of spring: a time of growth and renewal. Though Ramadan is oftentimes very busy, it is somehow still a time of slow intention, where we have an excuse to withdraw from the mundane and redirect our energies instead on that which fills our spiritual cup. As Mariem Masmoudi writes in her article, “Ramadan: The Month of Anti-Imperialism,” “Ramadan is the lived rejection of … desacralization.” Indeed, it is one of the few opportunities we have in the bustle and chaos of the modern world to fully immerse ourselves in the purifying, healing waters of the sacred.
We at IMIDIWAN took advantage of this time to pause and make plans for the upcoming year. We’ll be starting up our programming again with renewed purpose, and we look forward to reconnecting with community near and far.
